Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
A variety of enzymes play major roles in the menstrual cycle of a woman.Hypothalamus, pituitary, ovary are the main players. Many diseases are caused by disorders of the hormones. The Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common in women worldwide. PCOS is associated with several other diseases/morbidity-related factors such as obesity and other cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. The syndrome is characterised by non-production of egg or ovum from ovary due to dysfunction, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovaries (PCO). The typical symptoms of hyperandrogenism are male-like facial hair, acne and/or hair fall and baldness.Usually the menstrual interval in this condition will be more than 35 days. Ifabsence of menstrual bleeding extends to more than 90 days, it is defined as amenorrhea which needs more attention.
In Ayurveda it can be correlated with nashtaartava due to the lack of ovulation. Ayurveda provides great amount of hope in the management of this disease. This can be managed by shodhana and shamana procedures. The nasya with medicated oil is found to be very effective. We have been able to give the best result in PCOS through ayurvedic medicines.
