Hemiplegia

Hemiplegia is that condition caused by the injury to parts of the brain that controls movement of the limbs ,trunk, face etc  affecting one side of the body either left or right depending on the side affected. The condition may come suddenly or develop slowly over a period of time. Like other types of paralysis hemiplegia is characterised by significant loss of sensation and control in the affected area.

The brain is anatomically divided into two hemispheres. The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and right brain controls the left side of the body.

The causes of hemiplegia includes sudden injury to the brain by accidents of fall, cardiovascular problems like hemorrhage, stroke, infections like meningitis, brain tumours, congenital abnormalities like cerebral palsy.

The patient experiences total /partial loss of sensation on one side, changes in cognition, mood or perception, difficulty in speech, occassional seizures , spastic attacks where muscles move without conscious control.

Ayurveda describes this condition under Pakshaghata, one among the vata vyadhis. Ayurvedic medicines and panchakarma therapies help in improving the quality of life of a hemiplegic patient.
